Akselos unveils new flange module | Engineer Live

Jun 04, 2025Jun 04, 2025

Structural performance management provider Akselos has launched the SPM for Flanges, a new powerful module which enhances asset integrity across all sites. It addresses flange failures, which can be a major source of downtime and maintenance.

Hundreds of thousands of critical connectors can be found in a typical refinery, these play a key role in linking piping systems, pressure vessels, and essential equipment across both refineries and offshore platforms. Despite this, current maintenance programs can cause bottlenecks during turnarounds, causing safety risks, unplanned downtime, and delays.

The new module cuts flange analysis from days to hours, speeding up maintenance times across sites. It can be used to prevent over-tightening, improve safety, and ensure the product stays contained. When compared with traditional methods, the SPM for flangers allows operators to work up to 80% faster.

Claus Reimers, chief product and technology officer at Akselos, said: “Studies have shown that flange failures account for up to 5% of hazardous liquid accidents - each incident costing operators thousands, or even millions, in downtime and lost production. Operators don’t just need tools to keep things running; they need solutions that prevent problems before they happen. That’s how you hit reliability targets, cut down on HSSE risks, and keep performance on track.”

This marks a switch from tool-based asset integrity evaluation and towards a site-wide strategy for dealing with such issues. The new module can be integrated into the Akselos SPM suite, allowing operators to see real-time unified view of asset health.

Reimers added: “I’ve seen firsthand how slow, legacy flange analysis during shutdowns leads to costly delays and impacts operations. SPM for Flanges eliminates that bottleneck. It’s a fast, visual, data-driven solution that supports smarter, quicker decisions and that’s exactly the kind of shift our industry needs.”
